International Mathematical Olympiad 2023 Dates

Due to the Covid pandemic, the IMO 2023 will take place in virtual/ remote format. Candidates who are selected to participate in the International Mathematical Olympiad must check the dates of the events. The tentative dates of the IMO 2023 dates are given below:

International Mathematical Olympiad 2023 Registration

The candidates who wish to participate in the IMO exam must do online registration. The IMO Registration for each country is done separately. Candidates will have to qualify through many rounds of competition in order to participate in the International Mathematical Olympiad. In India, the IMO exam is being carried out by the Science Olympiad Foundation. The SOF IMO is open to the students of classes 1 to 12. The candidates can register for the International Mathematical Olympiad through their respective schools. A prospectus containing the Registration forms is sent to all schools registered with SOF.

How to Register for IMO 2023?

The details to do the online registration for the International Mathematical Olympiad for Indian students are given below:

  • Initially, candidates must visit the portal of the conducting authority, Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF).
  • In the homepage, candidates must check the details of the IMO. 
  • There is only one mode to apply for the IMO exam 2023 i.e. Offline. Interested students should contact their respective schools. The registration forms are already sent to the school authorities. It must be remembered that no student can apply for the IMO 2023 registration independently.
  • SOF will not accept any application form directly from students. Students should contact their respective schools for their registration.
  • The school’s coordinating teacher should fill the School Registration Form (SRF) and Students’ Registration Sheet (SRS) as per the guidelines given & should send it to the SOF’s office before the due date of submission of forms. 
  • SOF will register the applicant’s school and the students.  
  • As per the Students’ Registration Sheet (SRS) received from the School, SOF will generate roll numbers for all students.
  • Once the registration is complete, the candidates must check the exam dates and qualifying criteria for the International Mathematical Olympiad.

International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) 2023 Application Fee

The candidates applying for IMO must pay the registration fee to their respective schools. The schools then must pay the registration fee for all the candidates who have applied for the IMO 2023. The details of the IMO Registration Fee are given below:

International Mathematical Olympiad 2023 Eligibility Criteria

The applicants must check the eligibility criteria in order to participate in the International Mathematical Olympiad. The candidates must qualify in the pre-IMO qualifying rounds in order to be eligible to participate in the IMO. Only the candidates who fulfill the minimum eligibility must apply for the IMO. The details of the IMO Eligibility Criteria are given below:

  • A Country’s Contestants should normally be citizens or residents of that country and should be selected through that Country’s national Mathematical Olympiad or equivalent selection program. 
  • Contestants must have been born less than twenty years before 2 July in the year of participation at the IMO. 
  • Applicants must have been normally enrolled in full time primary or secondary education on or after 1 December in the year prior to the IMO, or,
  • In the case of home-schooled students, they must not have received a high-school diploma (or equivalent), and must be working toward such a credential on 1 December.
  • Level 1 Exam will be held for Class 1 to 12 students.
  • Those candidates who qualify in Level 1 from Class 3 to 12 are further called up for the level 2 exam.

International Mathematical Olympiad 2023 Exam Pattern

The International Mathematical Olympiad is held at two levels. The candidates must qualify at the School level, State/Zonal level, and International level. The applicants must check the exam pattern of the IMO before appearing for the exam. The details of the exam pattern are given below:

Level 1

  • The first level of the test is organized in the respective schools of the participants during school hours.
  • The level 1 competition is a test of 60 minutes duration comprising 35 objective-type (Multiple Choice) questions for class 1 to class 4 and 50 objective-type (Multiple Choice) questions for class 5 to class 12.
  • Mode of Exam: Offline
  • Type of Questions: Objective
  • Medium of Test: English
  • Syllabus of the Test: CBSE, ICSE/ISC, and State Board syllabi are followed for setting the test papers. 

Level 2

  • Level 2 is conducted for students of class 3 to class 12. 
  • IMO exam 2023-22 consists of four sections- Logical Reasoning, Mathematical Reasoning, Everyday Mathematics, and Achievers Section.\
  • Mode of Exam: Offline
  • Type of Questions: Objective
  • Medium of Test: English
  • Syllabus of the Test: CBSE, ICSE/ISC, and State Board syllabi are followed for setting the test papers. 

International Mathematical Olympiad 2023 Admit Card

Once the registration process is completed, the conducting authority will release the admit card for IMO. The hall ticket of IMO will be available online in PDF format.

  • Students can collect the SOF IMO admit card for level I exams from their respective school authorities. 
  • The admit card for the level II exams will be released one week before the exam. Therefore, students can download the same by visiting the official website of SOF.
  • It is compulsory for the participants to carry the admit card on the day of the exam.
  • Without a valid hall ticket, the candidates will not be allowed to enter the examination hall.

International Mathematical Olympiad 2023 Selection Process

The candidates who qualify in the school and district/ state level exams are selected for the International Mathematical Olympiad. The details of the IMO selection process have been explained in this section. The qualifiers to the second round (State/ Zone level) would include the following:

  • At International Level: Top 5% of candidates, class-wise, who appear in the 1st level exam internationally.
  • At Zone/State Level: Top 25 rank holders from each Zone and each class.
  • At School Level: Class topper where at least 10 students from a class appear in the exam & scores at least 50% qualifying marks. 

International Mathematical Olympiad 2023 Awards and Prizes

The winners of the International Mathematical Olympiad will be given awards and prizes by the International Mathematical Olympiad Foundation (IMOF).

  • The total number of prizes (first, second and third) must be approved by the Jury and should not normally exceed half the total number of Contestants. The numbers of first, second and, third prizes must be approximately in the ratio 1:2:3.
  • Special prizes may be awarded for solutions considered outstanding by the Jury. Proposals for such special prizes are put forward by the Chief Coordinator appointed by the Host Organisation.
  • The prizes will be awarded at the Closing Ceremony. Each Contestant who will not receive a first, second, or third prize receives a Certificate of Honourable Mention if he/she will receive seven points for the solution of at least one problem.
  • Each Participant and Observer receives a Certificate of Participation.

The International Mathematical Olympiad Foundation (IMOF) is a regulatory body that sponsors the IMO. The IMO is an international competition for high school students which has been running annually since 1959 and now has over 100 countries competing, including all members of the G20.   1. Apart from registering in or with your school is there any other method available?. What is the gender for the examination?

  2. Can the school still register my son’s name for the IMO to be held on 22nd November?
    Can it be done individually since due to some confusion his name has been registered for another exam and not maths?
