With no aspirants for postgraduate/masters in engineering courses in Tamil Nadu, as many as 47 B.Tech colleges have closed 92 programmes in the current academic year (2018-19). Along with Management (MBA) and Masters in Computer Science (MCA), Also many of these institutions closed down the ME courses including power systems and engineering, communication systems and applied electronics and VLSI design.

The AICTE – All India Council for Technical Education recently released the list of colleges approved for progressive closure from this academic year.

This is due to a low number of students applying for the particular courses and AICTE rule of the minimum number of admission in particular courses. Whereas, the sanctioned strength for a PG course is 18. and colleges can run a PG course if the minimum strength is 15. Colleges need at least three faculty members to run a course and it is not feasible to run the courses with one or two students,”. As per the AICTE’s reports, 19 B.Tech colleges have closed 42 UG programmes including mechanical and computer science courses.

The closure of PG courses is a worrying trend as it could affect the manpower in teaching and research as said by E. Balagurusamy, former Vice-Chancellor of Anna University. He also suggested for opting a scholarship scheme to attract the students to PG courses. “Both the AICTE and state government should take immediate steps like awarding scholarship and job guarantee to attract students. They can also increase the intake in tier 1 colleges which have good infrastructure and faculty members.”
