Recently HRD Ministry ranked IIT Guwahati as 5th Cleanest Institution among 174 shortlisted colleges for the first ‘swachhta‘ ranking of higher educational institutes under Government Institution. And O.P Jindal University has been ranked the 1st cleanest University in the country. Whereas, In the rankings released by HRD minister Prakash Javadekar, Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) has secured second place. Followed by Punjab University added more beauty to the City Beautiful as a city college (Post Graduate Govt College for Girls – Sector 11, Chandigarh, GCG) and Panjab University considered in the top seven position. Finally, the top 25 institutions were selected and awards were given under categories like Universities, Technical Institutions, Colleges and Government institutions. These awards were distributed at a ceremony based on ‘SWACHHTA’ Ranking 2017 of Higher Educational Institutions was held in New Delhi on 14 September 2017.

Basis of Swachhata Rankings: Cleanest Government Institution
An invitation was floated by Ministry and about 3500 Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) submitted an online application along with all the required details as per format. After that as per criteria, 174 institutions were shortlisted. Whereas officials from UGC and AICTE inspected these of all 174 campuses.
Parameters of Selection
The Parameters for a clean campus were formulated & on the basis of cleanliness and hygiene were inspected. The criteria are described below:
- Student/toilet ratio,
- Kitchen Hygienic Status,
- Availability of running water & water supply systems.
- The modernity of toilet & kitchen equipment,
- campus green cover,
- garbage disposal in hostels and academic buildings
- disposal techniques, and also a certain weightage to whether the institutions
- Weightage were also given on “spreading awareness & activities about Swachhta in any neighboring locality or village.
