The B.Tech degree is offered by VNIT Nagpur under eight distinct specialisations along with the B.Arch. degree. B.Tech courses are offered for four years, while B. Arch courses are offered for five years. For the B.Tech courses spread across different specialisations, a total number of 644 seats are available and 62 seats are available for the B.Arch course. Admission to the B.Tech and B.Arch courses is based on the JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) results of the candidates and the shortlisted candidates are invited to the JoSAA counselling round coordinated by NIT Patna as per the JEE results. 50 per cent of the seats in the B.Tech and B.Arch classes are reserved for Maharashtra students. For a period of two years, VNIT Nagpur offers the M.Tech degree for 18 different specialisations. Under the Research Assistant scheme, the institute also provides M.Tech with six different subjects of specialisation. Under the Research Assistant scheme, the period for M.Tech is three years. The M.Sc. is also provided by the Institute. Graduated in three distinct specialisations, viz. Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry. All three courses are three years in duration. For study purposes, VNIT Nagpur also provides Ph.D. courses for a period of three years under 15 different specialisations. Applicants must have a valid GATE score or an equivalent national level test. The Ph.D. course application process begins in the month of November and the qualifying applicants need to sit for the VNIT Entrance Exam. For an interview round, the shortlisted candidates are then called up.

Applicants with a postgraduate degree (M. Sc. or equivalent) in Basic Science with a NET / GATE qualification or a graduate degree with a NET / GATE qualification will earn an Rs. 25,000 stipend.
Rs. 25,000 (1st & 2nd year), Rs. 28,000/-(3rd year) will be awarded after a graduate degree in Engineering/ Technology (M.E./ M.Tech./ M.Arch. or equivalent) with NET / GATE qualification.

In 1960, the Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT) was established as the Visvesvaraya Regional Engineering College (VRCE). The institute is among the country's 31 NITs and prime engineering institutes. After being renamed as VNIT in 2002, the National Institutes of Technology Act 2007 declared the college to be an Institute of National Importance.
