The various research areas of the institute are discussed here:
The department of Biology Science in Mumbai is a department which conducts research at various levels and in various specializations from the molecular to the living ecosystems. The institute trains high quality researchers. The research professors are involved in exploring issues of development of epithelium and brain, intracellular transport, tissue dynamics, physiology, and behavior.
The chemists here are pro at experimental techniques such as synthetic chemistry, high field NMR, ultrafast lasers and single molecule methodologies, high resolution mass spectrometry. Research here is in topic; chemical physics, biophysics, theoretical chemistry, photochemistry, synthetic chemistry, bio-molecular imaging, bio-inorganic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, materials chemistry and nanocatalysis with an underlying interdisciplinary approach.
The scientists here study all areas of experimental as well as theoretical physics - from the tiniest subatomic particles to the whole universe. The research includes five departments: Dept. of Condensed Matter Physics and Material Sciences, Dept. of Astronomy and Astrophysics, Dept. of High Energy Physics, Dept. of Nuclear and Atomic Physics, and in the Dept. of Theoretical Physics.
Researchers here search about the nature of materials that are in the condensed state – familiar condensed phases like solids or liquids, but also another phases such as the superconducting phase at low temperatures, magnetically-ordered phases etc. They also work on semiconductors and nanostructured materials, and soft-matter. Electronic, physical, optical, mechanical and chemical properties of materials are studied in relation to their structure. The emphasis is on the experimental measurement of various properties using different probes in an attempt to understand the underlying physical behavior. Fabrication of optoelectronic, plasmonic, and superconducting device structures serve as test systems to study novel phenomena, as well as to enable real world applications.
This department is engaged in experiments which investigate the origin, evolution, and the ultimate fate of the universe using accelerator-based and non-accelerator based techniques. The department has activities in large-scale international collaborations at CERN, KEK, fermilab, as well as home-grown experiments in the areas of cosmic ray physics, gravitational physics, and cold atoms. With expertise in instrumentation and detector development, the department is a major driver of the upcoming Indian Neutrino Observatory.
The Department has programs in molecular dynamics and control, high intensity laser-matter interactions, ultrafast phenomena, nuclear structure and dynamics, nano and mesoscopic optics, many-body nuclear physics at finite temperature and angular momentum, search for neutrinoless double beta decay, nuclear spectroscopy, accelerator-based atomic and condensed matter physics, studies of ultracold atoms and molecules, as well as theoretical studies of nuclear and quark matter.
The scientists here work closely with experiments and data to build theories to understand everything, from the tiniest subatomic particles to the whole universe as well as string theory and mathematical physics. The department has a vibrant research atmosphere, with internationally acclaimed faculty, active graduate research, a vigorous postdoctoral program, and dozens of international experts visiting every year to collaborate and exchange ideas.
The School of Mathematics here conducts research in all areas of mathematics include; algebraic geometry, number theory, Lie groups, ergodic theory, representation theory, combinatorics and discrete mathematics, geometry and topology, dynamics, and probability.
The School of Technology and Computer Science was founded in 1997.It has its origins in the early efforts to build India's first digital computer in the mid-1950s and the subsequent developments at the institute in language and image processing, communications, software and theoretical computer science. The school today is a leading center in the world for conceptual and quantitative research in areas such as algorithms, applied probability, communications, formal methods, complexity theory, information theory, machine learning, and quantum computing.
